YOU WANT TO SEE A REAL CLOCK

NEVER  MIND  WHERE  2010  WENT,   IT'S  2011. AND  NO  MATTER  YOUR  POLITICAL  PARTY,  THINK  CONSERVATIVE  AND  WE  WILL  MUDDLE  THROUGH.  WE  GUARANTEE AN  INTERESTING  12  MONTHS,  MAYBE  EVEN  A  PRODUCTIVE  ONE.

Are either of combatants familiar with the term  "Fight Fair ?" Time will tell.

WE WANT YOU BACK

“IS” came to life February 2008; neutral then but political events forced “IS” to admit being conservative. Under a new President with suspect credentials it became obvious that “liberal,” “progressive,” and “politically correct,” terms  were gaining too much of a foothold...becoming more acceptable to voters in both weakening political parties. When the actions of the President indicated a slide toward “Socialism,” we announced our disapproval and did what we thought necessary; we took a stand against it.

We have not changed our minds and the recent election proves a large majority of voters fear the current administration has deliberately acted in a manner that weakens the country and drives us to depend upon government for everything.  So if you picked the wrong bumper sticker two years ago you probably realize that with your help we can put the locomotive back on the rails and save tomorrow.  Surely a better year is upon us. We wish you a happy one.

GREAT SOLUTION FOR TWO PROBLEMS

Clean the air on Wilroy Road by collecting drifting stink and turning it into electricity.

H. C Yu and Associates claim the fomenting garbage air in and above our trash dump can be collected, converted to electric energy sufficient to power over 3000 homes and provide area jobs when completed, maybe ten permanent positions. It should be up and running by August to the immense relief of nearby neighbors. Even the trickle up theory is at work here. Temporary jobs for perhaps 60 construction workers plus maybe 300 more in other industries who contribute materials.

If only they could do that at the Washington House and Senate.

PLACE YOUR BETS BECAUSE BOTH ARE PREDICTED

This might not be the year but one or the other  is our destiny according to environmentalists who hedge their prognostications a smidgen. Politicians call  such an  action a caveat. But the average American pays no attention to what any of them predict for the simple reason it is decades beyond their lifetime. It is possible your great-great-great grandchildren will still be experiencing looney predictions by people with too much time on their hands.   Only one Being knows and He is not talking.

THOU SHALT BE TESTED

Exactly 14 inches of potential flood material in my yard this Monday morning covering up the fact that the deer have removed every scintilla of azalea blossoms. Like an Upper Michigan typical January day when they have put away cars and use snowmopbiles. A good day to walk your property giving now reachable branches a good shaking before they break. But don't touch that shovel, leave the white stuff alone, God will tend to that later this week. It is difficult for ambulances to get around just now, turn on the TV and spend a day with your family. The obit columns are numerous enough.

CAN NEWLY EMPOWERED FORBES TURN JEFCOM AROUND

Now that Randy Forbes has been knighted and titled Chairman of the Armed Services Readiness Committee will his meetings with General Odierno, the man with the hammer, make any difference in the amount of personnel being transferred, fired, replaced? One would imagine "Readiness" would include suggesting, convincing, demanding, forcing  the military services to work together whether defending our nation from evil doers or defeating the enemy. Apparently it takes about 3000 military and civilian "employees" to make it happen while Gates, the boss, is probably steered, driven by bureaucrats to save $$$ where possible. Surely Obama knows nothing about the military, loathes it, and would disarm the country, that is until this recent election. Maybe some second thoughts on the horizon. Working together means a lot more than say Marines under fire asking the Air Force for help. Full unhesitating cooperation is a tough goal to reach partly because of past independence....as we learned in World War II and other nation clashes since. Too many supernumeraries that had to think about it. But don't ask the Admirals and Generals to agree with that statement.

HAVING BEEN THERE

The best words ever heard in 1945 were, "The war is over." The best words heard during the eleven months of combat, and then only rarely, were "mail call." It had finally reached you, it may have been weeks. Letters had been reduced in size by what they called  V-mail. The letter had been robbed of your sweetheart's pink paper and her perfume, or your mothers little drawn stick figures meant to convey nostalgia, but it was from home, exactly  what you needed. I hope, if you had someone out of country in uniform, he or she got a letter, or will very soon. Your sympathy was with those whose names were not called and walked away dejected. If you got a letter you were in tears no matter who sent it---it was from home.

CITY MOTHERS PLAY SANTA CLAUS

The Children’s Center got a boost when they agreed to post a letter of credit with the city for the turning lanes Council insisted must be completed and partially paid for by the Center. Only then could the Center be expanded to serve more children. Jeff Zeigler, who handles community relations for them, is grateful for the enabling document that assists the Center to obtain credit from a bank up to $63,000. Zeigler suggests that not having to pay cash makes it easier. The Center had received a Grant of a million and wanted to  accept more children using that money but could not pay for the traffic improvements AND serve more children.  City Hall may have solved their problem.  At last City Hall did something Christmas like, NOT HOLIDAY LIKE..

Found this in the City News Letter. They do their best not to use the word "Christmas."

"The Suffolk Grand Illumination took place on November 19th at Market Park, right next to Seaboard Station Railroad Museum at 326 North Main Street.
The Grand Illumination featured the lighting of a 32-foot tree with thousands of sparkling white lights. Hot apple cider was on hand to ward off any "Jack Frost" nipping at your nose"

So this is a "Grand Illumination Tree." Suffolk also has a "Safety Tree" but, sorry,  no "Christmas Tree." I  imagine Easter will be renamed, "Colored Egg Season" with lots of bunnies but no reference to Christ.

ARE MANY CITY GIFTS TO PEOPLE THAT DON'T NEED IT

From the SNH

"We can always use additional finances right now,” said Leila Rice, community and media relations manager for the organization. “We are currently serving about 250 families with 500 children on any given day.”Requests for shelter typically increase in the wintertime for a number of reasons. The colder weather drives people inside. Higher utility bills strain the budgets of those already at risk for homelessness, perhaps causing them to lose their homes or apartments.

“We’re turning away about 300 families a month just because of finances,” Rice said. “We’re seeing, because of the economy, a much greater need than ever before.”

REPEALED LAW RAISES QUESTIONS

What, does “serving openly as a homosexual” mean? Is all homosexual conduct permitted, e.g. cross dressing when going to the PX? What conduct is not permitted?
Will “hate speech” policies apply to the armed forces after the repeal of the law? If a service member uses a term offensive to homosexuals, can he be charged with hate speech? Will commanders be required to take judicial action? If no judicial action is taken, will commanders be subject to civil or criminal suit by various homosexual political groups and their elected sponsors? Will the personal opinion on homosexuality of a service member become an impediment to promotion or assignment to key billets?
Are there any assignments to which homosexuals must be or may not be assigned?
Will the Senate and the House Armed Services committees demand sexuality statistics to make certain that homosexuals are being promoted at the same rate as non-homosexuals?
Will homosexuals be promoted at a faster rate to “compensate” for previous years of discrimination?

What benefits will same-sex “partners” receive? How long must one have a relationship to qualify as a partner? Will partners of homosexuals be assigned to on-base housing? Do former partners of active duty homosexuals retain dependent benefits (like a divorced spouse) when divorce is not a legal option? Will homosexual service members be permitted to date each other? Live with each other as partners in bachelor officer quarters (BOQ) or bachelor enlisted quarters (BEQ)? How does this affect fraternization regulations? Will homosexuals be deployed to countries where homosexuality is a crime? If not, who picks up the slack? What happens if a dyke lesbian insists on staying with the guys, and fighting as a man? Using their facilities etc. because “she” wants to be a man?
When enlistments are up Will we see a mass exodus of our troops? If a gay soldier is offended by a straight soldier will we see a law suit filed?

The US Census Bureau reports that about 1% of the total population is LGBT (which is short for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender), which probably translates to less than 1% in the military. And we have a congress and president (all lower case now because they don’t deserve respect) that passes laws favorable to less than 1% of the population. This country has truly degenerated from a Constitutional Republic into nothing more than a mob-ruled third world cesspool full of liberals, progressives, and the politically correct.

QUESTIONS  FORWARDED BY AC

THANK YOU MISTER PRESIDENT

America somehow was knocked off the tracks by a series of events that has lead to a gradual but sure fall into horrendous debt. Politicians have stayed in power by cowardly refusing to face up to the cost of their giveaways. The citizens, always wanting and getting more from administrations that stay popular by giving in, now find themselves guilty of passing the nations almost insurmountable debt to future generations. Even the nations physical assets are crumbling around us, roads, dams, bridges, power grids, and buildings by the thousands. Repairing or replacing these assets would provide millions of jobs. Manufacturing labor has declined here but allowed to grow in other countries because foreign employees demand less. We have been so weakened by avarice a large percentage of Americans are susceptible to the lure of Socialism as the only solution. But we are waking up, even the sorry administration is discovering the the distance we have traveled from our constitutional beginning. Those early American documents written back the late seventeen hundreds are being dusted off and read again by everyone concerned about the fate of a country once respected for its power and individual freedom that we are losing to a government allowed to go astray. Many of us have lived through wars and deep depression, we look back and remember, I look forward to what time I have left and am frightened. We have saved for the future through often difficult decades and once again find it impossible to be sure about anything except taxes and death.

NEW CITY HALL A DONE DEAL

THIS IS A POST WE PRINTED LAST SEPTEMBER  9/24/10.  THE ONLY CHANGE IS THE COST

They know where it will be, how much it will cost, exactly what they want in it, and the City Mothers were seen in a fabric shop picking out curtain material. It will require at least $37,500,000 dollars, probably ours, and a way to pay for it will magically appear after the Finance Director realizes Council is serious about this. Best estimates for repairs  is about 17 million. We have not heard what will happen to Old City Hall. It could be  retrofitted and made suitable for future city departments necessary for additional paper work as Obama’s Social System grows.  You can’t just stop government but it could be disastrous to allow employees and taxpayers to continue treading those weakening floors; what to do in the meantime, limit the weight of personnel? One thing  to consider is purchasing an abandoned JfCom building in North Suffolk where they really wanted to be until Gates closed the gate on that rapidly expanding empire.  You  will be proud of your new City on  Washington Street, soon the place to be. Think about it...new Social Services  Center, new Police  precinct, the coming Fairgrounds Apartments, and now a new City Hall with a guaranteed  one stop shop for small business entrepreneurs. Are you for repairing the building or building a new one?

SORRY, TOO LATE NOW

“Months before signing legal documents assuring federal officials they could build Norfolk's starter light rail for $232 million, Hampton Roads Transit leaders knew it would actually cost tens of millions of dollars more, a new state investigation reveals.
In fact, HRT senior officials at one time maintained a separate, internal accounting of light-rail costs that was intentionally kept "secret" from government entities footing the bills, documents show. Then bids came in, construction began and costs continued to climb, without notice to many stakeholders, state investigators said. The current price tag: $338 million. HRT's former leader, Michael Townes, was forced to resign earlier this year. Several other HRT employees with the project have left the agency. Light rail's champion on the City Council, W. Randy Wright, was defeated at the polls.”
From the Virgina Pilot.”

The point is that too often prominent citizens, those with money, influence, assumed or alleged expertise are elected or appointed to important commissions, committees, boards, or elected offices and later discovered to have been disingenuous, outright liars, or incompetent. Candidates are usually vetted by each other so there is ample room to believe it was not a thorough investigation. When problems surface it is too late like the example above.  It appears, by the numerous firings and resignations over the past years Suffolk has had its share of similar activity.  We will allow you, as interested citizens to point out the rights or wrongs where you had no part in decisions.

A COLORFUL DAY

A surprising number of persons showed up at the Horton Veterans Cemetery Saturday morning to respectfully create a sea of green wreaths and red bows. Nearly three thousand purchased with donated money to and by understanding citizens. It was a beautiful scene; a variety of groups assembled for the task, young and old, many in uniform, many others who once wore a uniform. Like most there I had not dressed properly for the cold that crept in, nor had those who addressed the crowd. Dave Parker, a local TV personality told a story about a Combat Engineer on Omaha Beach D-Day. I was bursting to tell him I was there at the same time. Later we did talk about that day and he knew more about it than I did. There were other interesting speakers; one had suffered years of prison and torture. But the usual highlight of a fighter jet fly over hadn’t arrived when I’d had enough weather.

I could not count all the carefully parked motorcycles owned by a contingent of Vietnam survivors who travel to these military events just to show their respect and help out. These are just nice guys who have seen hell in person. We saluted each other as survivors of different wars.  Others there that day were very young ROTC, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Blue Star Mothers, and Civil Air Patrol Cadets, all of them placing wreaths. A member of the Wreath Organization said their mission is “To remember, honor and teach: remember the fallen: honor those who serve; teach our children the value of freedom”

DON'T GIVE UP

If only 24 show up at a meeting you held to show affected citizens why they should be against the proposed Four Farms development what would you think?  Are the rest of the nearby residents sufficiently educated, have  made up their mind, one way or the other, and need no help deciding. It must be frustrating to go to the trouble of organizing opposition and only a handful arrives to hear you. Suffolk Citizens For Responsible Growth know the monster development will take place if the Planning Commission says yes next time and Council does the same. You know both bodies are feeling tremendous pressure like they did when north Suffolk exploded. So what is next on your agenda, keep trying to warn your neighbors or close up shop knowing you gave it a shot? The idea of a new city springing from the earth is exciting. You can’t figure people, letting them know you are organized opposition might even cause them to be for it. Those who took the trouble to educate should be proud of their effort. It is not the end of it, developers will not  go away, traffic congestion is expected and acceptable .  Will it be good for our downtown or compete with it?.  Photo from SNH.

NAACP MEMBERS CHOSE YOUNG LEADERS

Lue Ward presents the appearance of a quiet, gentle, almost shy gentleman but the truth is he is an excellent choice to head the NAACP, powerful enough to recognize the real concerns of the organization. Mr. Gates, while President, accepted the challenge and convinced NAACP members to face the real problems of the organization. Mr. Ward will follow up and work to incorporate more of Suffolk’s young citizens into the important youth council. Lue is well known by many leaders of churches in the area and knows of their ability to work with younger persons that could be members of NAACP. We congratulate Lue Ward, Clinton Jenkins, and Anita Lewis for accepting the challenge and pray for their success.

DEPENDS UPON HOW YOU LOOK AT IT

Interesting development at our Council meeting Dec, 8 when a Suffolk group approached the bench for money in the vicinity of $4,000. It appeared to be a last minute appeal by the group, money they needed  must be in their hands by tomorrow for due payment to others. They figured the city would immediately appropriate the sum and they would be on their way. Council was hesitant, the city was not obligated to pay but thought it a wonderful idea because the group in a way deserved the financing they needed, but not necessarily from the city funds. This led to discussion by Council concerning the city "contingency fund," or was it an emergency. Neither fit the dire situation and after several minutes of embarrassing to watch motions, seconds to motions, and withdrawal of motions a vote was taken. The group's appeal for money was turned down four to three. It was a correct decision but a painful one. The group probably deserved a favorable response for their admirable achievement but there are many groups that could use extra money. This particular group had come up short and unless money comes from somewhere there will be broken hearts. By the way, Gardy and Parr said they'd rather write a personal check than use the contingency fund. Brown agreed and said he was good for $500. There was no motion or second to that. The group's gentle spokesperson could have asked, but didn't, "How much have you given the SCCA?

12/7/41 ALL BUT FORGOTTEN

A short battle between a handful of the Colonialists and a small company of England's best earned the name Lexington and Concord took place in what was to become the United States. In 1941 an island off the coast of the United States was overwhelmed by aircraft from Japanese  carriers. They named the battle Pearl Harbor.   Both of those historic "declarations of war" are all but forgotten. Both battles led to major changes in our world. 1942 in  America sixteen million joined the military from a  population of 140 million. Almost all those who lived then are gone and death has taken all but nine percent of those who put on uniforms. You won't hear taps played in our cemeteries today but all of us should remember events that shaped the  life and freedom  we enjoy today.

IT'S THE BEST WE CAN DO

The SCCA states things are looking up in the same way Obama said the recession is almost, nearly, just about, close to, approximately, practically over except for…. It is obvious the Director is turning every trick to lower expenses, keep his job, and reduce the embarrassment of the board after this many years attempting to amount to something. A contingent representing the SCCA shows up annually at Council to plead their case. Obviously the intent is to provide “culture” to a community they believe is short of it, or provide those interested a place where they are more comfortable. It is unfair to say the SCCA is primarily a watering hole for the local affluent...there is a very nice bar in the Hilton and it is not too crowded either. All those nice words by the mayor help get the tax dollars but that’s it. Just once, and we may have missed it, we would like to see an audit, even a balance sheet, understandable to the laymen showing how much of the tax dollars they don’t use. Show each year since the beginning so we may learn how much progress has not been made. It is a nice place and contributes to visible city assets but what else has it accomplished---really, isn't it very much like the Bureau of Tourism?

A BIG U TURN

This is a perfect example why many refrain from watching news on ABC, NBC, CBS, or MSNBC. Last week on a segment of the "Glenn Beck Show" on FOX (Fox Cable News) was the following: Even though President Obama is against offshore drilling for our country, he signed an executive order to loan $2 Billion of our taxpayer dollars (which we can't afford to loan since we're broke) to a Brazilian Oil Exploration Company  the  8th largest company in the entire world)  to drill for  oil  off the coast of Brazil! The oil that comes from this operation is for the sole purpose and use of China and NOT THE USA ! Now here's the real clincher...the Chinese government is under contract to purchase all the oil that this field will produce, which is hundreds of millions of barrels"... We have absolutely no gain from this transaction whatsoever! Wait, it gets more interesting. Guess  who  is the largest  individual stockholder of this  Brazilian Oil Company and who would benefit most from this? It is American BILLIONAIRE, George Soros, who was President Obama's most generous financial supporter during his campaign. For verification

IT IS TIME STATES GOT TOGETHER

Texans take their rights seriously.
A bill that has been filed for the 2011 state legislative session creates penalties of up to $5,000 in fines and up to five years in jail for anyone guilty of the "felony" of attempting "to enforce an act, order, law, statute, rule or regulation" of Obamacare, the president's plan that effectively nationalizes the health-care decision making process.
At least, that is what the bill that "relates to federal health care legislation" says:
The federal Act:
(1) is invalid in this state;
(2) is not recognized by this state;
(3) is specifically rejected by this state; and
(4) is null and void and of no effect in this state.

The President’s power can be seen throughout levels of government whether it is used for good or bad and it affects the attitude of other departments of government and citizens. Presidential power is so great no mortal can handle it with humility and full attention as is described in the constitution. Most who seek the job have no idea that once the power is theirs they could use it to transform the nation to their own desired level of perfection and often attempt it. Our current President aspires to lead the nation to Socialism but is not sufficiently equipped; no president is intended to have such power. Our history indicates we as a people are not to be ruled or commanded, as assumed and written in history. Our President may not yet realize that he has not risen above us but merely one of us. He was voted in and will be dismissed at the proper time.

Chained rowers of ancient sea going ships were replaced when they died or performed badly. That has been the voter trend in our congress for eons with nearly imperceptible change. This time it was a tsunami and surely our sprint toward Socialism is ended.

IT IS CALLED MARKETING

Vonage, a phone company, has excited vulnerable consumers with a simple TV commercial showing absolutely brilliant buyers agog over the fact they can deal without a contract, imagine, without a contract. Eager customers, according to the commercial,  believe a no contract deal is an economic miracle. The first thing they bump into is that the “no contract” is for three months only at $14.99 but then jumps to $25.99 plus taxes and fees. That is not mentioned in the commercial. And there is the fact you must hook up to a high-speed computer, a problem if you don’t have one and a pain if you do. If there ever was a need for caveat emptor it is now that too many retailers are phasing into gimmick sale practices. The tactic might be coming from “home office” leaving the retailer and customer as victims. So what else is out there we should be warned about?

A MAJORITY NOWADAYS MEANS NOTHING BUT GOVERNMENT DOES

I am motivated by Greg Cowles’ brave opinion in the SNH where he is states his objection to the meaningful word “Christmas” being pushed aside by liberals in favor of the word “holiday” that is so non-descriptive it is unworthy of a capitalized first letter. It is still the Halloween Parade, Easter Parade, and Fourth of July Parade. Changing the name of the Christmas Parade is nothing more than cowardly bowing to the progressives who want us all to avoid any connection to Christ. The same people want “prayer” tossed out of all public events, schools, and weddings will be next. My faithful dictionary was copyrighted in 1916 when “Christmas” was an acceptable word in almost any language. But for very definite reasons it is being pried out of the American lexicon.

Who, for example, in this city, decided to make the change and why? Was it because other nearby cities had already capitulated and we dared not be a holdout? Did the city manager decide, or perhaps the city attorney fearful of the tsunami caused by liberals? Was it on the city agenda and decided during a closed meeting or was part of a taped Council meeting? Do you remember having a say in the matter? Perhaps it was just a decision made by whoever puts the Christmas parade together. Some of us would like to know.  And I'd bet the majority will still call it Christmas Parade.

MAKE MINE AN OAK

We sympathize with anyone who mourns the loss of a tree, especially one that has seen generations go by and provided joy to those that have noticed the trees existence. We have oaks here in the remains of Milner Town that have competed with surrounding growth that includes a dozen species; maple, beech, “tulip,” ash, hickory, cedar, pine, some black walnuts nearly a hundred feet tall. Many stand firm with gaping holes at the bottom but are still good for a decade or two. But like the oak at Cedar Hill those elder oaks eventually drop rotted limbs that weigh enough to kill a human. The paths through our woods are often littered after a thunderstorm with brute dead limbs several inches in diameter and you wonder if they ever fall when there is someone close enough to hear them thump the ground. A tornado, some years ago snapped 27 huge pines as it roared through our woods but turned at the last second enough to our home. The oaks survived. There is an oak at our former home in Michigan I climbed as a boy. From the top that moved with the wind I could see the whole town. The tree is still there and growing but Cedar Hill has lost a friend.

ILLEGALS GIFTED $55 BILLION ANNUALY BY LIBERALS

11 Billion is spent annually on welfare to illegal aliens by state governments. $2.2 Billion dollars is spent on food assistance programs such as food stamps, and free school lunches for illegal aliens. $2.5 Billion dollars a year is spent on Medicaid for illegal aliens. $12 billion is spent on primary and secondary school education for children here illegally and they cannot speak a word of English! $17 Billion dollars a year is spent for education of the American-born children of illegal aliens, known as anchor babies. 11 Billion a year is spent to incarcerate illegal aliens. Kinda adds up, don’t it? Thought you'd like to know.

SUFFOLK IS HORSE COUNTRY

Leila Roche tells how Suffolk horse business is growing  in the SNH  "Suffolk Living" section. I was more than interested because most of her coverage was about HORSESPA, a farm started and owned by one our three daughters, Wendy Parker. If you read it you'll learn that her first move was steel fences dividing many pastures followed by a twenty stall all steel very expensive "barn" with lounge, tack room, feed room, and believes it unfair to keep a  horse in a stall unless it is in poor health.  She was not enjoying her Masters in Nursing at Leigh Memorial Hospital where she was  responsible for operation and staffing of both Critical Care and Intensive Care units. Spurning promotion she spent four years obtaining a law degree at William & Mary. But the outdoors kept humming to her and one day she said to us, "I bought a farm in Chuckatuck". I was allowed to drag the12 foot mower around the pastures and help install  fences  for a year or two while the place filled  up with horses and their deposits. But the place got too modern for  me when they started picking up the poop in the pastures. When you finish Leila's article click on the below email address and check out the many pictures. It is quite a place. Nothing else like it this side of Kentucky.

DEDICATED ALUMNUS

Mr. O’Connor is the kind of person you want in your corner promoting your product. One of his favorites appears to be the SCCA that dishes out culture in many different ways. Not popular with everyone in Suffolk the SCCA is the obvious cultural leader, providing local citizens with a headquarters for promoting a more gracious lifestyle. O’Conner shrugs off the notion his contribution to SCCA success exceeds what is expected of any supporter. But you don’t find too many SCCA board members willing, almost daily, to police the grounds picking up wind blown trash. He reminds me of those few members of any organization that hang around long after the oyster roast or public barbecue to wash the pots and pans, the least glamorous contribution.

He states that his motivation is to make certain failure will fail where he is involved. He also said, according to a  SNH article, that he thought it was a joke when he was nominated for an award.

He appears more as a gentle former wrestler than artsy and it is easy to believe he was primarily interested in rescuing his alma mater from possible delmolition. We applaud him.

WE ARE NOT ALONE

I read the Suffolk News Herald in the morning, go right to it from “IS” via our link. I will be a better reader when they don’t try so hard to confuse me with pop up ads. I’m a neophyte when playing in the mysterious world of bits and bytes as it is but these pop-ups jump on my screen without invitation smack in the middle of an interesting paragraph. I desperately click on the ad and different parts of the screen; sometimes they resist removal no matter the amount of button stabbing I do, if I am successful in eliminating one another takes its place…what I was reading goes somewhere and I must go fishing again to find it. The ads are probably effective except for the fact that I’d rather be reading news articles.

This day one by Tracy Agnew grabbed me. The one about the alleged criminal who apparently has mind control over computers where I don’t even have physical control. Certain valuable passages that may have enhanced prosecution of the alleged wrongdoer are missing from the software and no longer available. Of course this is an embarrassment to the force and not easily swept aside or hidden from public view. One hesitates to use the term “Keystone Cops,” because the charged person is still innocent until proven guilty, the evidence collectors had no part in the affair, nor the evidence keepers; it was merely the gods providing me with something to write about.

NEW WAY OF LOOKING AT IT

From Virginia News Source

"VIRGINIA BEACH (November 23, 2010) - - We recently logged a rant about the TSA for its sexual molestation under the guise of national security. I'd personally rather risk being among 3,000 killed in a new terrorist attack in the U.S. than to give up my rights under the Constitution."

"IS" regards that as noble but silly and suggests we think about it...if part of Obama's plan to become a socialist nation is to jam up the government operations any way he can what better way than to impair air transportation. If everyone refused to be searched the new "close up and personal way" air traffic would be stopped until TSA adopted less stringent methods of search and embarrass.  This will happen if a significant amount of Americans stay mad as hell, or  planes will fly half full, and that is not an option.

Of course the airlines could install boarding  machines that bypass personal search but automatically set off any explosive material carried by the boarding passenger.

A THANKSGIVING MESSAGE

America is not a dog and does not require a “because I said so” jurisprudence or legislators who knit laws of such insulting complexity that they are heavier than chains, or a president who acts like, speaks like, and is received like a king. The president is not our teacher, our tutor, our guide or ruler. He does not command us: we command him. We serve neither him nor his vision. It is not his job or his prerogative to redefine custom, law, and beliefs; to appropriate industries; to seize the country, as it were, by the shoulders or by the throat so as to impose by force of theatrical charisma his justice upon 300 million others. It is neither his job nor his prerogative to shift the power of decision away from them, and to him and the acolytes of his choosing.

Is my characterization of unprecedented presumption incorrect? Listen to the words of the leader of President Obama’s transition team and perhaps his next chief–of-staff: “It’s important that President-Elect Obama is prepared to really take power and begin to rule day one.” Or more recently, the latest presidential appointment to avoid confirmation by the Senate - the new head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau – who wrote: “President Obama understands the importance of leveling the playing field again.”

“Take power…rule…leveling.” Though this is the model now, this has never been and should never again be the model of the presidency or the character of the American president. No one can say this too strongly, and no one can say it enough until it is remedied. We are not subjects; we are citizens. We fought a war so that we do not have to treat even kings like kings, and, if I may remind you – we won that war.

VERY LITTLE LIGHT AT END OF TUNNELS

Every morning except Monday the Suffolk News Herald is scanned to be sure we agree on any news event and usually we do. But here we try to pack all the news into a few paragraphs to save reader time. We have had a link to their paper for years but they have not returned the favor. Take the mess at a Hobson church where the congregation is suffering the same disease as Repubs and Demos, they can’t get along. Twice the pastor has been fired and rehired, the church door sealed with lock and chain, later cut. It looks like a split to me. I experienced that 60 years ago when our church split…do we sing hymns with the organ or a cappella? Two churches a block apart now…that’s when I split.

And our state and local dignitaries believe they have softened Mr. Gates unexplained drive to close JefCom. No change of heart yet but Gates will put our officials on the list to take part in discussions about whether or not to close, or how much to close. Those boys in DC don’t often restudy an issue but the last election put the “whoa” on a lot of stuff.

Then there’s the local teacher who posted true information on the hilarious Facebook and may suffer humiliation and loss of career for what the Board and school administration term stupid remarks. Apparently teachers, unlike other human species, are not allowed to do terrible things like that.

Hot and dry summer not good for farmers, just as Obama has not been good for the nation. Peanuts down 50%, cotton worse, soybeans, forget it. Oh, yes, jobs are also down. Now on top of that comes the colorful caterpillars that turn into something after they destroy the vegetation. To say nothing about the exponential exploding deer herd. I have a six-point buck and eight, probably pregnant, girlfriends eating my landscape attempts. One farmer I know counted 23 deer devouring his soybeans. The end may be near, folks.

SO WHO PAYS

Council still pondering left turn lane to the Children’s Center on Wilroy Road. The childcare facility was awarded a million + in federal stimulus money to expand the Early Head Start program. So City recommends the Center be required to pay for the turn lane but the Director, Tamie Rittenhoouse says the Center can’t afford to use their money and might go out of business. No turn lane compromises safety of the children. The stimulus money would allow a 3000 square foot expansion, increase the parking lot, and allow Head Start to increase to a max of 95 with a staff of 32. But a city traffic engineer is concerned that this would add traffic to an already-busy roadway. A city study states there have been three accidents in the eight years since 2002 caused by vehicles turning left into the Center, and lowering the speed limit may have prevented those..

So who wins? The Center maintains student expansion means more students arriving by bus, making it safer and less traffic but Council won’t allow expansion without a new turn lane. This argument over who pays is called “dueling.”

HAD TO READ IT TWICE

A piece in the SNH written by Leila Roche pictured our grey haired handsome Treasurer smiling as he peeked over a pile of frozen turkeys. My first thought was; "That's great, our Treasurer giving up $28,000 of his salary to buy food to give away for thankgiving." I've always thought Ron was a good guy even though every year he receives the biggest check I write.  But reading deeper into the story I came across the name Leotis Williams, that's the one who gave away two thousand turkeys. That Mr. Williams owns L. W. Lawn Care and MWM Investsments and has been generously giving food away since 1997.
Pretty darn clever, Ron, and excellent timing.

A SIGN OF TOUGHNESS

City Manager Selena Cuffee-Glen said, ”NO” to David Sylvia when he tried to get a $4,000 raise for a NEW employee. Apparently she rightfully thought Sylvia was out of line and he was. If a new hire said yes to the offered salary one would assume the agreement was satisfactory. Does it matter that the replaced employee was paid $6,000 more than the new hire? Sylvia suggested the raise was for exceptional performance after, as the City Manager pointed out, only two months on that job, hardly consistent with the City Compensation Plan.

THE QUESTION IS WHY

The city will celebrate the opening of its Visitor Center today.

A ribbon cutting will be held at 4 p.m. at the center, housed in the Nansemond County Courthouse, 524 N. Main Street, a news release says.
A tour of the center will follow the ceremony.

The center will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Perhaps, now that City Hall has a permanent home, they will tell us how much of our taxes goes to fund this operation,  and how can anyone determine the financial return?

WHAT IS YOUR CALL

With Ann Seward reporting a year ending surplus Council can go on a bit of spending spree, or put it in a shoebox for a rainy day. $1,300,000 will renovate a building for a recreation center at Bennett’s Creek and, equally important, use $450,000 to fix up the Animal Shelter. Both expenditures will make citizens happy.

The economy could be improving as tax receipts to the city are up including real-estate numbers that might be a problem later if the recession further damages the housing and commercial building market. So far so good and the question becomes will Suffolk still come up with the $163 million operating budget, or wish it had not let go of the surplus?

GREAT DAY FOR THE NANSEMOND INDIANS

Mattanock Town passes Council almost unanimously after only eight years of trading blows with Chief Bass and his tribe of positive followers. All Council members figured it was a good fight and everybody wins.  Amazingly no one  spoke in opposition. Perhaps it was fear of being scalped but more likely no one could come up with a valid reason to say, "No," except Bennett.

Now the teepee is in the Nansemond Indian's camp and it is too bad we are facing a winter instead of a spring. Chief Bass told me construction would begin when the ink is dry on the papers yet to be signed.  A log longhouse was the first thing he said would rise on the territory that finally has been returned to its original owners, genuine Native Americans.

The Indian Gods were finally able to pierce enough skulls in local government with the arrow of Common Sense. Mr.Bennett is left spinning in the wind.

REVERSE EMINENT DOMAIN ON 30-DAY HOLD

With a 5 – 3 “NO” our Planning Commission slammed the door again on the Four Farms expansion of our south downtown area. These developers would force growth between White Marsh and Hosier Road to the tune of 462 acres. It would provide 2500 new homes and 164,000 square feet of commercial space. Sounds wonderful when a builder will throw in a new school and connector roads to currently congested traffic but residents of the area don’t want any part of it. Eminent Domain is when governments steal buildings and land to meet their needs. Reverse Eminent Domain is when an all-wise government forces buildings and land on a populace because they think it’s a good idea. Planning Commissions are created to stop bad ideas before they get to Council Chambers where growth is a hallucinogen that fulfills dreams. We invite your comment.

AN HOUR OF YOUR TIME WOULD HELP

If you think about it the meeting in the Council Chambers at 7pm on 11/17 could have been to celebrate seven straight profitable years of operation in Mattanock Town. That is how long they have tried to convince our “Council” the village would be informative and provide the Tourist Bureau validity. Forced to return many times with further proof it could fly they were still met with doubts, or something else, from hard “negotiators,” The question remains: were there doubts in their minds about the success of Indian plans, or did it all hang on the success of restoring an aged bank that has received no attention for years? One local gentleman purchased the building and immediately the “city” chiseled him out of it. What or who prompted this despicable action is still under wraps but we know the sordid details.

The idea suddenly was that the now city owned crumbling “pigeon coup” could rise like the fabled Phoenix and a Black Museum suddenly appear. But a restored bank would not by itself warrant the expense so local geniuses dreamed of doubling the bank’s size and using that space as a Dismal Swamp sample to arouse tourist interest. That idea is as dead as the Swamp but there is still enough demand for a Black Museum although we don’t yet have a White museum. Phoenix will rise but now is the time for Mattanock. The Indians were robbed of their land and locked up on reservations. Back then the Slaves were given freedom and nothing else. Neither group owes the other.

The Indian village requires no noticeable city expense. A small portion of Lone Star Lakes is all that is required, that and a Yes vote. It is quite possible that an attraction in that area will broaden interest in our huge relatively unused park. There are objections to the Indian Village as there was to replacing the bridge to Driver.  Now is the time to say, “Yes.”

INDIANS FINAL TRY FOR LONE STAR INDIAN VILLAGE 11/17

I asked Chief Barry Bass if there was anything "IS" could do to help convince City Council to give small acerage to Indians tribes so they could build historical authenic Village of Mattanock. Indians do not say much under ordinary circumstances but this is not ordinary. The village will assist those with  interests in early American history as well  as our Tourist Industry that could use a shot  in the arm. The Nansemond Indians have been attempting to sell their idea to Suffolk for more than eight years. The story goes that  Council is finally ready to work WITH them. The chief asks for your support by once again filling Council Chambers with you folks that second the motion. He guarantees, you know these Indians have mysterious  powers, he guarantees the building will support a huge crowd because all city employees will be gone for the day. He expects us there by 7 PM.

ANOTHER COMMENT THAT BECAME A POST

We are a nation without a president. " There I said it said it.. we have no president...but the office itself has been hijacked by someone who hates the country and that for which it stands...and loves our enemies. And this hijacker is hiding behind the skirts of those Americans who suffer from self-induced inferiority complexes (because of their race or impoverishment) so as to avoid exposing himself to those who would remove him. He is a ravenous wolf pretending to be an abandoned neighborhood dog. I hope that most Americans will now realize how faulty affirmative action really is. Obama does a disservice to the word "worthless". He'd have to improve considerably to rate that, but as it is now, there's no term in the English language that provides a level lower. The first couple see themselves as some sort of royalty, as do the leaders of every socialist country in existence. Peel away the appearances afforded by the codification of goverment from any socialist enterprise and what you get is nothing more than a criminal gang exploiting citizens for their own benefit. It never fails to amaze this poster that people who espouse more or less socialist agendas seem to grab as much as they can for themselves. These two moochers are just living large at our expense. This is the most classless first couple to ever occupy the white house. They have no dignity. The younger Bush does not engage in tit for tat debates because it is undignified for the President to do so. Of all the things a president and first lady should be is dignified, but these two are just kids in a candy store. They are a painful and expensive embarassment. I belive the term grifter applies to them both. These two are just classless, uncouth, undignified con artists and nothing more. I shudder to think of how much more these two thieves will loot from the Nation in the final 2 years of this disgraceful presidency. We saw how Malcom X was managed when he didn't tout the line that extremists wanted. I think that Obama is beholden to powerful, dangerous interests and he has proven himself incompetent. When these puppet masters decide they need a new front man, they won't be waiting for a new election.

THE ODDS ARE GOOD YOU KNOW A VETERAN

They come in all sizes, colors, ages, and at one time were young boys or girls...for that matter many still are. I know war veterans ninety plus, some between fifty and sixty, and as young as 35. All of them are victims of too many wars fought for our country or others that needed help. You could say they were "lucky" by the measurement of coming home even if terribly wounded, mind or body. During those terrible times more than a million Americans were robbed of precious life and those close to him or her suffered immeasurably depending upon the closeness of the relationship.  Most veterans are not at all enchanted by sales of goods in their honor and will spend the day like any other...but surely they will remember the moment they lost a buddy, or saw one disappear into the back of a military ambulance. A veteran of any war will not be upset if no one salutes that day but you can bet they will smile if you do.

HATS OFF TO SCHOOL BOARD DECISION

Several members of the Chuckatuck Ruitan Club had the same thoughts about Deran Whitney when he addressed them with an update about our school system... remove the word "interim." His presentation was upbeat, and detailed enough to make us realize he  should have a shot at the position held by Dr. Liverman. Who knows our public school  system better than Deren and what ails it? Our schools soak up $143,046,000 in one year with the help of 2,021 employees. Seventy three percent of the budget is spent on "Instruction."  The one year current price of one student's education  is $10,000.

Our congratulations go to Deren Whitney, Superinendent of Suffolk  Public Schools.

NEW OR USED CITY HALL

You will pay the tab either  way so maybe you have  an  opinion about necessary  costs to make the Market Street stable, they say a few million or so, and let some time go by. If economic  common sense returns to the nation the tax dollars may go farther and be less of a burden to those who now are close to being  strapped, as we used to say. Or does it make more sense to take the big step, find or borrow the money and get on with it? Bond money is relatively cheap and the city debt currently is under control.
Besides, Mr. Brown survived election musical chairs and occupies a cushioned seat from which he can again move to raise the means.

A certain amount of pride goes with having shiny brand new items like a city hall. I remember a few bad years in depression times like those maybe coming. Then a shiny brand new item was a new pair of tennis shoes. OK, it's not that bad just yet but mortgage or interest payments on a city hall are not much different than on those thousands of repossessed homes all over the country

Surely discussions are underway in rooms we may not know about but here we can kick the can around.
And surely the city Mothers will appreciate your imput.  .

DUMBING DOWN AGAIN ???

Right there in the Pilot, read it parents. The School Board is considering another way to make students look better on paper...lower the numbers, make passing tests easier on students, easier on teachers, raise parental esteem. Another miracle under development.  Parents feared their children would lose college admissions and scholarships under the stricter scale, which rates 94 as the minimum for an A. Every other local school division has already switched. So will we  unless you decide not to go along. Does it make sense to assure graduation from High School and first year college failure? And do parents really have difficulty with  having  some students do better than others?

School District Proposes a New Grading Scale

Here we go again.  Another huge decision without appropriate input from a wide variety of staff members.  This proposal isn't really that at all.  It's rather embarrassing that this is the type of work that comes out from the committee lead by a school board member.  I expect more and you should too.  These are decisions that impact virtually every student, teacher, and parent.  Because the decision has a broad impact, it's fair to ask for quality thinking toward making that decision.

I've written a letter to the editor and also the School Board.  I hope they take notice.  I hope you will, too!

WHAT DO YOU THINK

We are considering a requirement that comments to “IS” also include the name of the writer. On February 1st, 2011 we will have offered this opportunity to comment for three years. At this point 56,325 different computers have logged on and we feel the numbers are sufficient to “upgrade.” As always we are interested in your opinion.

There are two ways to accomplish this. Both the Suffolk News Herald and the Pilot require a simple registration. Name and email address. Once registered all that is required to comment is your name. This makes sense for your protection from those that could use your name for an ulterior motive. Having your email address allows us, only us to check the validity of the comment.

The other method is just a requirement the commenter attach his/her name.
In either case the usual rules would apply as stated on the first page of “IS.”

As monitor of “IS” I get many cheap shots when a reader is upset, not in agreement, or just doesn’t think I’m a nice guy. The most recent was, “You are a sick old man.” Although the writer was partially correct (85+ is chronologically old) I declined publishing it. For all I know he may be older and sicker. I suspect either requirement would improve spelling, grammar, and eliminate pointless one-liners. Spelling and grammar is no problem if a writer’s comment is sincere and apropos. We would appreciate hearing from you on the above two choices.

THE STATUS QUO

There must be something magic about the split single word “status quo” because Suffolk has endured it for what seems decades. In the army we changed socks every day if the enemy gave us time. Mr. Brown will one day slump over on the dais having done what for his borough, race, or people? He, like others, receives token gifts from organized homebuilders and does what with the money? No
need for campaign signs or handouts. He knows he can’t be beat by the average person running against him. Probably the same could be said about Bennett and Curtiss. The folks in their boroughs are content to believe their rep is the key to neighborhood physical improvements and the handy new Social Services building will keep a bright light shining on them until death demands a replacement. There is nothing wrong with that. That’s how politicians stay afloat, give folks just enough and appear to fight expensive projects in other boroughs.

Mr. Varney, a quality gentleman, took on tough old Gardy who still wields enough charm and wit to beat the odds in his bailiwick. Varney was close and many hope he will be around for another challenge. But Gardy is hardly status quo, that requires at least two terms.

Voters will forgive most anything but a lousy dirty trick letter falsely putting down a good man. When that happens there should be an immediate resignation because it reflects on not only the opponent but other folks connected to the letter sender. The word for that kind of activity is “Shame on you.” It’s a different story if one is forced to a last ditch refute by getting out such a letter to defend oneself.
One eye opener was candidate Martin's ability to find financial backers, an average contribution of $400. $20,000 from 50 contributors. Her opponent Duman paid his own expenses.
And it is a shame that one borough was not sensible enough to place a professional on the school board. Oh well, another year of almost the same status standstill.

SORRY, NO SOCIAL SECURITY COLA

You can't make this stuff up and it will make you furious, the most bloated adventure by any American President. The whole Obama family is going, Barack, Michelle, their daughters and friends. We have never seen a president and first lady, and  friends, use taxpayers' money like this. The presidential entourage will have 40 aircraft, including the Air Force One that will ferry the president. There will be six armored cars, including the Barack Mobile, a Cadillac, plus 30 sniffer dogs will be put in service to boost the security arrangements during Obama's visit. They have booked the entire Taj Mahal Hotel, including 570 rooms, plus all banquets and restaurants. Since his security contingent and staff will comprise a huge number, 125 rooms at Taj President have also been booked, apart from 80 to 90 rooms each in Grand Hyatt and The Oberoi hotels. The NCPA, where the President is expected to meet representatives from the business community, has also been entirely booked.

An official said, "Obama's contingent is huge. There are two jumbo jets coming along with Air Force One, which will be flanked by security jets. There will be 30 to 40 secret service agents, who will arrive before him. The President's convoy has 45 cars, including the Lincoln Continental in which the President travels." The picture is of two hundred million dollars, the amount this adventure is estimated to cost per day.       Check it out.

ALL OVER BUT THE PARTIES.

"From IS," congrats on your victories, you earned them by the old method, getting out the vote. The city Council gained but the school system lost opportunity. Now we can set  aside the  local aspects of government changeover, and there was lilttle of that, to concentrate on what a National sea change means. Pelosi is gone, one of greatest obstacles to recovery, and enough others are relegated to pastures. A combo of Tea Party  organizations and what's left of the Republicans welded and pulled off an historic booting of House delegates. Now if we can just find a way to eliminate the  Department of Energy, the hapless Department of Education, and the painful IRS we could eliminate the national debt Obama has placed like a yoke on our grandchildren. Two years from now we can get Socialism and worried conversation about it out of our hair. All we need to do to become "Exceptional America" again is to hush up the President and put a stop to the arrogance of government. We can save many millions of tax payer dollars by keeping the first lady from traveling, for god's sake lock the Queen in her room like the old kings did.

I told you Mike would win.
