I asked Chief Barry Bass if there was anything "IS" could do to help convince City Council to give small acerage to Indians tribes so they could build historical authenic Village of Mattanock. Indians do not say much under ordinary circumstances but this is not ordinary. The village will assist those with interests in early American history as well as our Tourist Industry that could use a shot in the arm. The Nansemond Indians have been attempting to sell their idea to Suffolk for more than eight years. The story goes that Council is finally ready to work WITH them. The chief asks for your support by once again filling Council Chambers with you folks that second the motion. He guarantees, you know these Indians have mysterious powers, he guarantees the building will support a huge crowd because all city employees will be gone for the day. He expects us there by 7 PM.

I see only positive things for Suffolk once this village has been approved and built. We should respect this tribe for wanting to share there heritage with us here in Suffolk! How fortunate we would be to have an authentic indian village right here for our children to learn from. Textbooks are great, but seeing the real thing is worth a thousand words. School field trips would be a real learning experience, especially since the village would be so close and convenient. Think of the impression a village of this nature would make on not only the young, but all ages. This would be great for tourism as well, since we virtually have nothing to draw tourist to this area now. It certainly seems like a no brainer to me and I can not imagine the first negative vote. However, I've never been able to figure out how this current board thinks. This may not benefit them, but who cares about them, it will certainly benefit the people. Let the indians have their village. What are the negatives? I see none at all. The indians are doing us the favor. It is the only fair and right thing to do! I am not of indian ancestory at all, but I do believe we at least owe them this much.
We believe most people in Suffolk can name without hesitation who the first "NO" vote will be. We believe it takes 6 yes from the 8 Council members so the fate of the Indian village rests in the hands of Curtiss Milteer. If Bennett does the right thing all is well. The onslys reason for a"no" would come under the heading of blackmail
An excellent Letter To The Editor appeared in the Suffolk News Herald today written by Dorothy Womack. She implores the Council to allow construction of the Indian village of Mattanock and lists the benefits to us for doing so. A good quick read.

"The Honorable Councilman Brown nows that the right thing is not to just give the people lans away for nothing to the indians. He will make a deal when ther is something in it for his people and that is why he gets votes from us.
It should be how other council persons ses it and vote too. Just look at Mr Pair. he votes for his land to be zoned for his sale out near my house and such. We dont need to give land to indians we need to do the Phienix Bank project for people that are already in town and need some help. to give peoples and to indians is not right. The Honorable Councilman Brown will stand up to mayor and others to stop this until they give hime what he wants. November 13, 2010 11:01 AM."
