GREAT DAY FOR THE NANSEMOND INDIANS

Mattanock Town passes Council almost unanimously after only eight years of trading blows with Chief Bass and his tribe of positive followers. All Council members figured it was a good fight and everybody wins.  Amazingly no one  spoke in opposition. Perhaps it was fear of being scalped but more likely no one could come up with a valid reason to say, "No," except Bennett.

Now the teepee is in the Nansemond Indian's camp and it is too bad we are facing a winter instead of a spring. Chief Bass told me construction would begin when the ink is dry on the papers yet to be signed.  A log longhouse was the first thing he said would rise on the territory that finally has been returned to its original owners, genuine Native Americans.

The Indian Gods were finally able to pierce enough skulls in local government with the arrow of Common Sense. Mr.Bennett is left spinning in the wind.

Bennett voted NO

Immediately two comments came in stating that Bennett voted "NO." Or one wrote two identical comments

Bennett is still chewing on the entrance at Pembroke, the main road in from 10. He was told, twice this evening, that fixing up the entrance was not part of the current contract. Give him credit, he tried hard to be the bad guy. When Mattanock becomes famous the city will be eager to construct a fine entrance...and dedicate it to Mr. Bennett.

I hope the Nansmond Indians are successful with their new adventure of an Indian Village. But I also hope it does not turn into a sink hole for the city to wind up putting thousands of dollars into each year like a SCCA

Once again Redmen proved their patience by outwaiting the obvious blackmail by two Blackmen who I think wanted the Phoenix restored first. Worse yet was the city agenda for the Council Meeting that put all that boring stuff ahead of the Indian vote, knowing it would pass. And all those people waiting to show their support had to suffer. Poor planning Worse

The SCCA disaster is really the Council's fault. The annuual City subsidy probably exceeds the costs of ALL of the shows put on, especially now that so many are now on a list much less well known than those that perform in nearby areas, including smaller communities like Smithfield. The Caroline Martins keep asking for more subsidy rather than cleaning up their act and at least having shows where the tickets sell. It is absurd to ask for City subsidies when some of the "shows" aren't even 10% sold. No one expects ticket sales alone to fund the whole show, but the tickets that aren't being sold (check the web site) combine with the poor restaurant to create a demand to know where the money is going, including the hundreds of thousands of dollars in memberships (some say this is dropping to less than the number of members of other Suffolk civic groups that don't even have constant subsidy demands) and "sponsorships" that have even been challenged (such as listing "Portfolio" Magazine as sponsor this year even though it no longer is in business.)

What could possibly prove failure more than empty seats and elite attitudes towards lack of minimal local support until improvements
and leadership responsiveness are acheived.

The Indians are not likely to suffer this fate as long as they continue to be conservative and even repay much of their initial funding loans. In fact, they may even create a "new" historical and arts venue that will force the SCCA either to respond to the public or to seek ways to rent out and gradually close much of its building to non-productive activities and private parties.

If public support rules, the Indians have hit a home run in our community and are likely to bring much success to their venture and to our city. Imagine what just half of the annual SCCA sunsidy would do if spread among the Indians, some of our veterans organizations and activities, and additional programs at Riddick's Folly and the Suffolk Museum.

JUST READ YOUR COMMENT. WHERE DID YOU FIND AMOUNT OF TICKET SALES AND OTHER RELATED MATTERS? I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THOSE NUMBERS

Hmmmmmm, I wonder what "Hey lets go to the casino" would sound like in the community.?

As a native american and one of the First People, I say THANK YOU for your kind and thoughtful acts, but when will the rest of you new-comers from Europe and elsewhere be leaving?

This was a long time coming and should have been done years and years ago. IT was a toughtless dead to hold it up and does diminishes the claim now, of doing what is right.

At any rate: Please come and see what we can do, when given the small lea-way to regain a small foot-hold on "Our-Land". For all those who have supported this for years, THANK YOU and come visit often. For the rest of you, scalps will be taken and sold in the visitor's center!
