AN IDEA WHOSE TIME HAS COME

For too long we have been too complacent about the workings of Congress.  Many citizens had no idea that members of Congress could retire with the same pay after only one term, that they specifically exempted themselves from many of the laws they have passed (such as being exempt from any fear of prosecution for sexual harassment) while ordinary citizens must live under those laws. The latest was to exempt themselves from the Healthcare Reform ... in all of its forms. Somehow, that doesn't seem logical. We do not have an elite that is above the law. I truly don't care if they are Democrat, Republican, Independent or whatever. The self-serving must stop. Constitutional Convention - this is a good way to do that. It is an idea whose time has come. And, with the advent of modern communication, the process can be moved along with incredible speed. There is talk out there that the "government" doesn't care what the people think. That is irrelevant. It is incumbent on the population to address elected officials to the wrongs afflicted against the populace...you and me. Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the land...all because of public pressure. Author unknown

We've been screaming for a Constitutional Convention for years. It's about time this country had a good old fashioned family feud to get the bad blood out.

How about Federal term limits, two for Senators and six for Members of the House. A balanced budget amendment to ensure we never again spend our way into a depression. Establish term limits for Supreme Court Justices. Remove anchor baby citizenship birthright of illegal parents. Qualify paying income taxes with a person's right to vote. Define state's rights to peacefully allow them to dissolve their union with the country.

Q: Is Congress exempt from "many" laws including one against sexual harassment?

A: No. The latest e-mail rant against Congress — proposing a "28th Amendment" to the Constitution — is full of false and outdated claims.

visit...http://www.factcheck.org/2010/01/lawmaker-loopholes/ for more information or SNOPES at http://www.snopes.com/politics/medical/28thamendment.asp

Ahh..."Inside Suffolk Virginia" is at it again...passing along information for thought as if it's legit. Makes you wonder if some of the other nonsense brought forth here on the local level is even true. I understand there is no claim that this site is anything remotely connected to a news organization but for one to claim this site speaks for the majority (or even a small minority of Suffolkians) is crazy. It's copy and paste web-al-ism at it's greatest.

Please...think (or better yet...cross check) before you post.

BTW...I've found the miracle cure for ____ (insert favorite disease here). Just send $2000 and a plane ticket and I'll be happy to give you the information. :)

Snopes says that most of this is fiction but several states are saying it is possible to save the country with such a convention and are ready to go. You will be hearing a lot more about this subject as many states are considering just what they want to accomplish.

"IS" really does appreciate our friend from Anon 26/1:48. I'll bet he is great to live with...can find evil intent in sunshine, does well with prose but can't seem to understand "IS" is only a thought provoker, not a news org. I'd like to hear his thinking on the way the country is headed. Or the changes wrought by our socialistic man in DC. I wonder if Obama gets letters from him. Oh yes, Anon 26/1:48 still follows "IS". Probably to prevent harm to his fellow man.

I actually like that Pock poses ideas from others. Those he chooses to post from anon sources often provide things that are interesting to ponder.

I don't agree with what is going on in Washington. I think we are headed down a dangerous path from which this country may never recover. Too much spending and not enough return on investment unless you consider a welfare state a positive return.

I do read I.S....mainly for laughs. The biggest beef I have is the passing along of erroneous information. That is a continual danger (not just here mind you) with information people read on the internet. "Hey, it's there so it must be true." I listen to Neal Boortz' radio program. One of his mantras is "Just because I say it doesn't make it true. Look it up for yourself." I like that approach as it challenges people to investigate. Truth is a powerful weapon against ignorance.

I've read quite a few items here which fall into the category of urban myth. I'm a conservative and listen to Boortz (libertarian), Rush, and others. I can't stand Hannity as he takes one little point and beats listeners over the with it regardless of the true magnitude of the issue. Glen Beck is almost as bad...in my humble opinion.

I've never proclaimed I.S. to be a news organization. However, if it is an outlet for re-publishing of forwarded e-mails, it is perpetuating a number of inaccuracies which exist in cyberspace. That only serves to pull one from dealing in truth and reality which is a great tool to use against liberalism and the "touchy-feely" drivel pushed by "that" side.

I don't claim to be perfect and I only speak for myself. I'm an 40+ optimist who strives for truth. I believe everyone has a voice and that is should be about what you say and not how loud you say it.

I think that covers my stance. Perhaps I'm a curmudgeon in training but I like to think I've got an open mind to other people and ideas given a reasoned approach.

Anon/148 No one cares who you listen to or your age or anything. If you think both Hannity and Glen Beck to anything but great then you have given us a clear picture of yourself and how you think. The fact that Pock prints your rants tells us he wants you exposed. We want you to just go away.

I disagree, we need different opinions even if they aren't in line with our personnal beliefs. IS is described in a paragraph on the home page read it to better understand what it is all about.

Go ahead and shake the tree with your point of view. If the comments make you laugh that's great. If they give you another point of view to ponder that's even better. The point is to keep reading and participating in IS, we all benefit. Thanks

Now is the time to lift our national policy from the quicksand of injustice -- the injustice of judges who ignore the will of the people, of mayors who ignore the will of the people, of a Congress and President who ignore the will of the people.
When the oppressor bars the oppressed from enjoying any of the God given liberties to which we were entrusted by the Constitution, then we are enslaved.
When the government dictates how we live our lives, then we are enslaved.
When an elite political class seeks to control us and enacts legislation that hurts us and to which they themselves aren't bound -- like health care -- then we are enslaved.
When the party in power can tell private corporations how much they can compensate their employees, then we are enslaved.
When the ruling class can throw elaborate parties, vote themselves a salary increase, send their kids to private school, and preserve their own private healthcare insurance, while depriving us of the same and imposing onerous taxes on the people, then we are enslaved.
Remember the ruling class always claims to know what's best for the people -- today it's smart meters, smart cars, smart energy, government run education, government run healthcare and government controlled media. They'll continue to commandeer the private sector -- running our banks, manipulating insurance companies, replacing our mortgage brokers and controlling our car companies.

Bob, A "new" constitution is not necessary. What is needed is for our elected officials to follow the existing document. If they did so, they would spend years going over and throwing out legislation and programs that don't conform. We need fewer lawyers and professors, and more regular folks with common sense at the reins... fewer millionaires, and most of all, term limits. I'm appalled that every idiot that gets elected to a single term becomes eligible for a lucrative federal pension. It's time to make RE-ELECTION the determinant factor. Citizens should not be forced to reward their "mistakes".

Remember that First point: The States cannot call a Constitutional Convention. 2/3 of the States must apply to Congress who then calls a convention

Second point: It was WE THE PEOPLE who through our States who formed the federal government. It was not JUST the States. The States were once represented by the Senate while We the People were supposedly represented by the House.
What many Amreicans fail to remember is the greatest threat to individual freedom comes from the over-reaching interpretations of Constitutional powers from the Supreme Court.
