Compare Suffolk to Top 10 Best Places
Once known as the peanut capital of the world, this town an hour from Virginia Beach celebrates its nutty history every fall with a four-day festival that includes a demolition derby, a carnival, and a shrimp feast.

Residents can relax by fishing on Lake Meade or taking a canoe trip down nearby Dismal Swamp State Park (the place looks a lot better than the name makes it sound), or eating at the many locally owned restaurants that serve Southern specialties.

Perhaps we should change the name of our beloved city. The name is famous in England, but being 91 out of a hundred is no worse that our Public School graduation rate. On the other hand who do they think they are,we all know Suffolk is without fault.

That fellow in the canoe should be slapping mosquitos. I did that swamp trip one time. Better we be known as a bunch of nuts. Surely out Tourism department will claim they are very responsible for the spread. If we are 91 it's a lie.

I was amused but in a way proud that Suffolk had placed so high on a list of good places to live. Then I used the InsideSuffolk link to the SNH and read about the homeowner too stupid not to know that growing pot was against the law. Especially stupid when you are listed as a Day Care.

Did anyone observe what were the criteria for selection and what were the communities that scored higher? Lets take a stab at what should used: Low high school dropout rate; Better school test scores; Higher percentile of graduates going to 4 year colleges; Low taxes and fees; Improved municipal services; Low crime rate; Lower percent of blighted neighborhoods; Agressive economic development based on strategic planning; Pro-business environment; Diverse profile of business activity trending towards more higher paying jobs; Good long term community planning; and a well connected network of roads and bridges. If they do the above the rest of the fluff will follow.

Was open and transparent government a criteria? If so Suffolk would be right behind a Chinese, Cuban, Iranian or Russian city. I decided to terminate my subscription to Money Magazine. If I want to read BS I'll get the New York Times.

You mixed nuts don't get it. Does paddeling a canoe on the GD Swamp makes Suffolk a great small city? Does a Peanutfest that hasn't changed in so many years a blind man can find his own way to the Portajohnny or restaurants that are just hanging on waiting for a Zugat review make it a better place to live? Nothing much is changing for the better that is unless you grow your own.

All this great news about Suffolk being a top 100 small city, it's water quality and restaurants, one wonders will this be an excuse for Johnson & company to raise taxes next year. It's not that we don't like hearing good news it's just that we don't trust our local government.

Reading the news ticker this morning, Suffolk may have contender for the Darwin Awards. This may be a first for Hampton Roads and another reason why we are Surprising Suffolk.

Did Skydive Suffolk expand their operation or is base jumping the latest visitor attraction? Low flying helicopters and runaway six foot tall chickens didn't work. God knows what's next.

Suffolk could be a nice place to live, except for our local government! I have decided to move back to Norfolk, where we know all of our crooks. In Suffolk they masqurade as local politicians and others that demand to spend our local tax money. Just look at our Mayor for a fine example of election for self-service! I love the City of Suffolk, but hate the city of Suffolk! I couild list hundreds of examples, like how our taxes are spent, lies told, and more, but we all know the story.

As the movers take my belongings to the truck, I will never look back. I hate to leave my neighbors, but love to leave my City Politicians and lying city officials! Suffolk could be the best place to live in Tidewater, if we could only fire all of our politians and senior city officals, all of whom lie for a living.
