Bulk Refuse Coming Back - But Just for a Short While

Suffolk’s Council took time to address the bulk refuse issue at its work session today. Several members indicated that they are glad it is back in place. Councilman Parr let us know that if Council knew there would have been a surplus, then the bulk refuse service would never have been taken away.

Gardy patted all on the back for following the new city law. Barlow mentioned that the refuse program just wasn’t understood. Brown wanted to make sure we all know that the dates for the reestablishment of the service is December 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010. Milteer reminded all that there are still a number of folks who don’t have city trashcans. (I believe this was to have been addressed for Milteer by city staff many months ago when he previously brought this issue up.)

I don’t buy that bulk refuse would have been left in if staff knew there was a surplus. City Council CHOSE TO STOP THIS SERVICE when they chose to fund things that are not essential to the management of the city (e.g., Peanut Fest and other nonprofit organizations).

As I remind people all the time, I think that things like Peanut Fest are valuable contributions to our city, but I don't think it's necessarily our citizen dollars that should pay for this. This is a city service that was REMOVED while available dollars were used for other things.

FYI: Mr. Neilson indicated that if you have bulk refuse put out before December 1st, it will be picked up.

What say you?

So can I get my twenty three dollars back now? I had to pay twenty dollars, plus a three dollar convieniance charge for using my new fangled credit card type thing, to get a chair picked up that was moved aside and left three weeks in a row..a simple lawn chair that wouldn't fit in a can. Typical.

And this is what we pay for in Suffolk. Of course we can all be ahppy now that we are even giving out bonuses for such work too! Only in little Suffolk could these things come to pass and all just take it on faith!

Good comments all Deb, but you certianly don't expect any answers do you? The problem is that our money is used frequently to buy votes and pad supporters, just like peanut mess. Suffolk has a problem and it must be fixed, but how is the multi-million dollar question. Are we destin to always be the backwater as far as area leadership goes? I would say that answer is a resounding YES!

They are going to give us back a service we already pay for. I agree with another writer that ia can aonly be the Suffolk Way!

Deb, if your planing on running again in the future, you just lost N.Suffolk voters over the "loser" known as Peanut Fest.

The lingering question is the future propects of SPSA and how it will affect Suffolk. Millions of dollars are being "saved" by not paying tipping fees. Those dollars are being spent elsewhere. Check the last pages of the budget and you will see where government is supporting charities. There is no doubt the city will pull back bulk refuse collections.

Support for things like Peanut Fest are a litmus test for success in elected office. Support the things like Peanut Fest, Driver Days, SCCA and the like to succeed by gathering votes with other people's money. It is the Suffolk way!
