QUAYLE FROM A NEWS ITEM BY TRACEY AGNEW. The 2011 First Citizen winner will be honored with a program and reception at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts.
After nearly 20 years in the Virginia State Senate, Quayle has racked up numerous awards and accolades, the Suffolk First Citizen being only the most recent. He has been a tireless advocate for the 13th District while at the same time being a multi-talented family man. “He’s just a very humble individual,” said Brenda Quayle, the senator’s wife. “He’s very conscientious about his work and kind to people. But I’m too prejudiced. I just think he’s the perfect man.” That's it, THE PERFECT MAN

At the reception remember not to get between the Senator and the hors dourves. He loves a free meal.
I can imagine the overflow of those from the north that will attend the recepition honoring Quayle at the SCCA. They need to remember that he represents the entire city and the SCCA is funded by the entire city. Like it or not.By their attending the event in person, they are not going to fall under a spell that is going to brainwash them into being one of it's supporters.
There is a huge disparity in what State Senator Quayle and his wife think of him and what the rest of us see. What has he done for education in Virginia besides throw more money into that hole? Isn't he the long time head of that State committee? He's obviously well fed--but what else can he claim for real accomplishments other than these popularity awards? He needs to return to the private sector and be replaced by someone who will fight on fiscal and performance accountability grounds.
Senator Quayle has done such an outstanding job representing his district, the state assembly is considering reducing its size so he can do an even better job. If he keeps it up who knows how much smaller his district will become the next time around.
The Rotary Clubs made the right choise selecting Fred Perfect Quayle. That is until he no longer represent them and they cannot leverage his political patronage. At the SCCA reception, guests are strongly urged to eat before attending.
You've got to wonder about the staff at the Suffolk News Herald. I clicked on the story line Quayle to be honored, the screen changes above the smiling face of the Senator was a advertisment "What Government Doesn't Want You to Know". I go on to another section called Suffolk Living. Below the name Suffolk Living are advertisments for Parr Funeral Homes and Carver Memorial Cemetary. I'm not sure what to make of it. Is it political satire, blind optimism, morose humor or editorial indifference.
We have seen Fred Quayle get the First Citizen award from the Rotary Club and now Chris Jones's shop get another from the HR Chamber of Commerce. Does anyone see a pattern of political patronage and pay back here?
