Joe Barlow, a knowledgeable Council Member and farmer citizen has decided not to run again for one of the seats on the dais. He wants to spend more time as the retired gentleman he is. Joe said long ago he would not run if a great candidate surfaced and one finally has. Mike Duman, one of Suffolk’s most successful businessmen believes he now has the time to assume a responsible position in local government. Inside Suffolk has worked long to convince him our city could benefit from his business principles. At 1:45 today, May 17, 2010, Mike told Inside Suffolk he is ready and willing. Do us a favor, Mike needs signatures, 150 of them right now, drop by the dealership and help kick off his campaign.

Mike before you get my endorsement you need to tell me what you stand for and why you are running. What is your campaign platform?
I have been asked if either Mary Hill or Mr. Gray would be running for Barlows's seat. I asked Gray as recently as April this year if he was interested and his answer was the same as a year ago...he does not believe he can devote enough time to the position. There was some expectation that Mary Hill would be a candidate but so far no news is no news.
Joe Barlow is a fine gentleman and a thinker, we don't like to see him leave Council. But Mike is a very good choice to replace him. Like his ads say, "Duman can." And who doesn't Mike know, or who does not know Mike?
Now that is good news, Mike is not under Mayor Johnson's spell and has proven he thinks for himself. You don't grow a business like his in a small town without certain skills. He took many risks but always knew what he was doing. And surely he knows that assessments in this city are way out of line. If only he will speak for ALL the people he knows.
Mike Duman is a powerhouse and he gets my vote for Council no matter who might run against him. Mike says what he thinks and he thinks. The three black members will have to die in office to be replaced and black citizens are paying the price of that. Gardy and Parr need to go back to their businesses if there is to be a significant change in Council brainpower. Let us pray.
The first comment summarizes a crutial aspect in helping form public opinion of who will represent the Chuckatuck borough in the next four years. Without knowing the platform of who we are voting for, we are guilty of the same thing we Suffolkians criticized other candidates of in the past. Let's be fair and hear from him before signing up.
Here are a few suggestions to consider for the Borough of Chuckatuck; discriminatory assessment process, inflated property taxes, the city budget, the public school budget, the Nansemond Indian Village at Lone Star Lakes, the status of the King's Highway Bridge, development along Routes 10, 460 and 17 corridors, the cost of road maintenance, fast rising utility rates, the effects of new deep well on local water use, family property transfers, Crittenden Road improvements, the future status of the Villages of Hobson, Sandy Bottom and Eclipse. It's time to start thinking and saying how these issues will be addressed.
I noticed that your Inside Suffolk went over 50,000 computers that have clicked on to your site at least one time. Mike should have no trouble being elected.I also nolticed that two comments were asking about Mike's "Platform." So what is a platform? Anon 4:42 has already created enough work for him to think about.
With Mike running for council he has more of a platform than the others on council. It seems that those who want to stand in the way of change always call for a platform as some means of commitment for a candidate they want to trip up.
Reminds me what Linda Johnson's platform was, or Parr, or so on and so on.
Mike will make a good councilman, because he is honest and not under the sway of the Johnson crowd. He is a free thinker, with real ability to do an honest job. Talk about a new idea and breath of fresh air on council.
Let me get this right. Some person doesn't want the public to vett a candidate nor hear what that candidate thinks or wants for their constituents? Are we to believe we should just go along because they know better than we do like so many candidates and their supporters in the past? Haven't we already learned our lesson from the last presidential election for Mr. Hope & Change, or are we doomed to repeat it. Asking about a platform is not a trap, it's so we understand who and why we are voting for someone and how that person earns our trust and our vote. Although I don't know him, I have often heard from people I trust that Mike is a good man. In a way I hope he has an opponent so we may hear the issues placed candidly on the table. Come on Mike what do you have to say besides wanting the council seat!
I recall Mayor Johnson was all about open and transparent government. Nobody dared to challenge her and her supporters and look at the mess we have.
There is no doubt in my mind, good manager, good to his employees, and we doubt there is any ulterior motive for desiring a seat on Council. Others already seated I'm not so sure. They say Paar did a lot for himself but I've seen no proof of that asertion.I think we have in Suffolk too many too quick to judge.
What is so tough about being transparent? If honesty is the best policy there is no reason to hide anything. You would think now and then the Council would come directly to the taxpayers and ask for advice. They rely on each other to OK what they have offered as advice on any city matter...why not go a bit further and ask the taxpayers. Councilmen should pose a question right here in Inside Suffolk. You will defiitely get an answer. It is time the city recognized this website and made use of it. I'll lay 8 to 5 Pock will allow the mayor space.

This is how historicaly we elected our council representatives in Suffolk. So how about a little trust, change and hope this time around.
If you want proof for how Parr does for himslef first, just look at the millions made on the rezoning of his property right after he was elected to council. Nuf-said.
I have known Mike Duman for many years and have always found him to be a man of hardwork, honesty and integrity. He is one to give of himself and work hard at it. While not a Saint, Mike is a good person who can think for himself. He also knows the benefit of reaching out to others' to guide his thinking. He is a person, that when a commitment has been given, it is not retracted for self gain or any other reason.
While it may be true that everyone that runs for a political position has some EGO in the fight, I know that Mike is "head and shoulders" above the rest we have elected.
So if you are looking for some positive points to guide my approval, these are the issues I point to, for my STRONG SUPPORT Of Mike Duman for a position on our governing City Council!
I plead with all that read this to get behind this good man and help make a differance, in how our local governemnt is run. Believe it or not, the local governement is the level of government that takes the most from us, and hopefully can give back the most too, if lead by a good man like Mike Duman...
Please sign his petitions and give the most support you can lend him. This time we have a real champion for doing the peoples' work!

When one sits back and takes a long look at the politics and politicans here in the divided Suffolk. Many wont admit it but there are some serious issues where alcohol is or was involved with various incidents and no one has been punished or even taken to court to answer for ones actions.Its as nothing has happend and no one has suffered because of nothing was wrong and no "laws" were broken. No one in power or seeks power is responsbile thus the status quo prevails.
Hey Mikey, can you at least tell us Chuckatuckians what you think about the King's Highway Bridge. Do you want to rebuild it at the same location? Do you think it should be built further South where the river is wider and the property has been snapped up by specuators, or do you want to avoid the subject altogether? Your silence is problematic by those you want to support you.
Did Mike pose for the photo to look like another IS photo of TR? Switch out the glasses for a monocle and a suit.
Perhaps Mike, now serving on our EDA Board, will tell us where EDA got the money to give to the Cobham project, a business in Suffolk that was faltering. Our infusion of $824,000 hopefully saved the deal and will provide jobs. EDA has no money except what city hall gives it or backs a loan.
We need to hear from all of our council-people about what they think of the spending of grant money like the new PD Boat. The money does come from us all and when they spend it, it is no different than spending what they take form us locally.
What does the mighty council say, including any new contenders?
I think Mike could be a good council person and probably do a good job. I hope he leaves some of his used car training behind because I hate to see the real estate tax start like this: I've got to get $1.30 and then with a little negotiation he drops it to $1.20 and with a llttle more public negotiation he agrees to drop it to $1.10 and this is his final offer and when he sees he is not going to get by with the $1.10 he drops it to $1.00 and we accept it thinking we are getting a good deal.
Where is the police ID board that should be hanging around his neck? Car salesmen are nothing but thieves.If elected do we get a gurantee that he wont become another ME politician? Will there be no conflict of interest between Duman and the city when it comes to city vehicle purchases? If the city buys Ford or any other new vehicle sales (GM etc etc) that he represents, that if the city purchases direct from the factory he wont recieve a sales commission or a contract commission directly from them? Would Mike like to comment at this time? If he wants support, the question and answer can go a long way in one determining to support or not to support. I dont think that IS needs to relay the message. Duman needs to go on the record not Roger nor any one else at IS. What say you Mike?
It's funny how one person who has had a bad experience with a car purchase enables that person to pass judgement on ALL dealerships and uses terms like thieves to describe them. Seems pretty shallow to me. This fine gentleman should look around as he drives and take note of all those cars with the named "Duman" attached.

All said toungue in cheek, I will not back off, however If I was ready to buy I would only by a Ford product and a few select makes that come from the Asian or European mfgs. Obama Motors of which we are a part owners in (not by choice) will not buy. Lawyers, liberals, car salesmen and tow truck drivers are in the lower spectrum of the food chain. I have bought from Duman before, doest mean I will buy into his politics

I think before anyone in Suffolk voted for the Duman, they better take a real long look at him. What does a used car salesman know about running a city? Would he put aside his business for the sake of Suffolk, of course not. Would he be willing to walk away from his business for the period of time that he was a councilman? Will it be another case of voting for someone because you see him on T.V. and hear his commercials? You have no idea what they stand for but you heard their name somewhere. Would Mr. Duman be willing to make decisions based on the fact that it would make his personal business more profitable? Of course he would. Look closely in how he really runs his business. What is his ideological platform? I think this is just one more way for a businessman to get his hands around the government policy to turn it in his favor. What kind of education does Mike Duman bring to the table. Are we voting for yet another politician that doesn't understand the basic princples of economics and the real issues that face this community? I want to hear real words from him. Intelligent, articulate words, other than "The DUMAN Can."
