YOUR PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM IS UP FOR GRABS

A little more heat being generated in the School Board tent, Dr. Debra Wahlstrom hoping to defeat Debranski who should be measured against her credentials, and Bill Whitley who is stepping down after 51 years of positions in Suffolk Schools. This leaves a slot for one of three, Linda Bouchard, and Dorothy Gamble, who teaches in Chesapeake, and perhaps Mary Hill who needs no introduction. Planning Commissioner William Goodman has thrown down the glove and hopes to oust incumbent Lorraine Skeeter from the Cypress seat. This leaves Holy Neck where retired principal Bill Owen squares off against incumbent Enoch Copeland. All this could be interesting and we ask why three incumbents face challenges. We would also like to hear what all have to offer to bring about needed changes in the system that needs help. This School Board election provides a golden opportunity to make big changes, especially in view of the fact Dr. Liverman steps aside. The hope is that the voters are wise enough to do the right thing. Removing incumbents might be a good start if the replacements are up to the task and not just looking for extra income or prestige. Suffolk's future depends on the education of its children.

Hopefully new faces on the School Board, if any, will be free to think. The belief, earlier, was that Board members came to board meetings AFTER "indoctrination" by the good Dr. Liverman. I suppose that would mean they just went along with the boss. The Board conclusion should be that it is more important to learn new material than how to pass SOL tests.

It is demeaning for a teacher of quality to face a classroom where children just want the school day over so they can get back to play. And far too many parents are not sufficiently educated to know or care about the progress of their juveniles who will certainly become delinquent unless the school system administration is upgraded to toughness. We who pay the taxes have had enough of the usual.

It's about tough love. Years ago parents sent their children to school so they may have a better life than their own. Today parents don't care and let government raise their children like so many corn stalks in a field. They want to be their child's friend instead of making the tough parental decisions that will help shape their child's future. So the progressive thinking Department of Education gleefully steps in to raise your child and indoctrinate them to be good loyal lifetime followers of government.

There is a resolution on the Council agenda to hand the business of selling, caps, gowns, school rings, etc, to students of Suffolk Schools. The namneof the business is Jostens and the salesman has been Debranski. I guess that makes it legal for a School Board member to capitalize on his connection with the schools.

There was a time in America when parents could be expected to teach their children about chivalry and manners, but that time is largely past. There also was a time when teachers could be expected to help impart such lessons, but the stresses they find themselves under today tend to narrow their focus. No time in the day to teach basics, only how to pass SOL tests

If Mayor Linda was smart, she would be endorsing Wahlstrom. She is more qualified than the incumbent and she is not doing business with the district. Linda get smart and endorse someone who can change the direction of our school system.
