OBAMA STRIKES AGAIN

We can be sure our Police Department will find good ways to sop up up the $386,450 Federal Grant and already state a portion will buy a spanking new police boat. Lord knows we have plenty of water surface to watch over, scattered though it may be. But there may still be juridiction matters to conclude…three large lakes belong to Norfolk and another to Portsmouth. When there was more money around I could depend on seeing Norfolk cops drive by my dock on lake Western Branch…I was ticketed more than once. They were good guys but now they are gone and I wonder: “Who do you call” when I see a boat in distress. Once I was told to phone the Coast Guard but I figured it would be too expensive for them to fly in with that monster chopper. Will Suffolk brass allow Suffolk police on unowned lakes?

The Federal Grant money buys quite a boat. The question is where it will used besides as a float at Peanutfest Parades? Most large lakes in Suffolk are the property of another municipality and they are very particular about the size of marine engine and the wake creating shore erosion. This leaves the James, Nansemond Rivers, Chuckatuck and Bennett's Creeks. Scoping the police blotter there hasn't been any increase in crime (0) along the waterways and there is no sign of Somali Pirates anywhere. So why do we need another never ending money pit after the initial big ticket equipment purchase. What rational was the justification for this grant? Who would you trust more to respond to a boat in distress the Coast Guard or Suffolk PD?

Where will our one and only police boat be housed Downtown, North Suffolk or South Quay? There is great distance involved and critical time lost in tranportation. So why not bite the bullet and buy two or three maybe four boats. That way we can be "propected" and our police officers have a place they fish and waterski from while on duty. Lynette and Debbie can then promote Suffolk as the Cypress Gardens of Virginia.

The dirty secret is the SPD flotilla will be out writing tickets to boaters. Anyone that's not squeaky clean and by the book will be written up. After all boaters must have large amounts of descretionary dollars they can afford to pay. Our little girl in the Budget Office Ms. Seward will be proposing a boat tax to pay for the police department's new toys.

Top reasons why the SPD should not to take Obama's stimulus money for a patrol boat.

Waterskiing championships are in warmer climate.
Bass Masters awards cannot be given to municipalities.
No amphibious invatsion expected anytime soon by the Iranian Navy.
Somali Pirates not seen lately.
Haitian Refugees prefer Florida.
Gas prices still too high.
No sunscreen at the Rite Aid.
Duck season is a month away.
