RALEIGH VERSUS CLASON
Well we now have a fight brewing between a Constitutional Officer and a Military Reservist. We don’t want to get in the middle of this one but we will accept your comments. Both have experience; both are dedicated to service to their community. “Good Old boy” may affect the outcome and suspected cover-ups of bad news. We have heard nothing but positive about the performance of the Sheriff and his department but will keep an open mind about “time for change.” If there is any way that Clason can improve the department we’d like to hear about it. As far as we can tell, the sheriff’s popularity is not exclusive with downtown residents. If there is any real difference between North and South Suffolk it might become evident during this campaign...but we suspect that our sheriff has not neglected voters up there.

Colud it be that the sheriff sees a bigger divide between the two cities and there could be planning in the works to see the north attempt to incorporate and break from the city. It would at least give them the police protection that they would need. When will the sheriff comment on his sons troubles with the legal system that appears to have just gone away? 48 Years of this man's "public serivce" needs to end with his defeat.IS does need to take a stand along with other media sources. IS claims to be for open and transparent govt. Since when isnt the sheriff not a part of govt.IS endorsed several of their closest friends why should they be any different now? VOAI..
I have not yet made my mind up, but I am inclined to vote for fresh ideas and new blood for Sheriff. Raleigh has been a fixture for a long time and Suffolk may just need to move on without him. He has also been very supportive of the good-ole-boys and that is always bad!
As I recall the last local election the Constitutional Officers lined up behind those advocating the status quo of higher taxes, big city government, backroom deals and almost no accountability. Well you have one means to keep their feet to the fire and that is your vote.
Forget running on the issues. Practicaly no one has a clue what the Sheriff does. It's all about who has the most signs and poll watchers wins. Bet ya the Sign Gang are contacting their pals to post those nasty campaign boards all over Suffolk.
I have lived in Suffolk most of my life, and I am absolutely astounded at the attacks some of your readers are making on Raliegh Issacs, probably one of the most highly respected officials we've had in the history of our community.
Sheriff Issacs has lead the way with dozens of local organizations to see that they work with and respected our law enforcement efforts, and he has provided many scholarships to local people to assist them and has even been well known for working with former retired police officers who have substantial experience in working with our public.
I do not write into you as much as “OD” whom I understand has written over 700 comments to you if you click on his initials, in the last year. However, I do believe that the great bulk of the people with whom I am talking to, and actually no serious exceptions, are strongly in favor of Sheriff Issacs and his entire team. His reputation, and the fact that he was formerly head of the Virginia Sheriff’s Association, show that Suffolk can be pride of his role and the virtually unanimous endorsement the citizens have given him with the exceptions of some small nitpicking and really disgusting family low shots on this blog that have been made by apparently extremely prolific writers who basically are opposed to virtually every activity in our community and the successes and achievements of anyone in any department of city government or private business.

I dont believe that anyone posting is am questioning the sheriffs the ability or the service of the man. The question is the cover up and or the failure to respond to the questions of his son's legal problems. His 4 DUI and the outcome of the trial? When was it? The findings? How can this man make another run for the office while this type of good old boy net work is being used to cover up and to protect. Until Raleigh can respond to this question, there will always be the right of the public to know.If the DA would like to comment, it could help the sheriff. but then again could it harm C Phillips Ferguson? Who is willling to throw the other under the bus? Meanwhile listen to the crickets

Vote for corruption.The citizens will have a chance to help in cleaning up the corruption between the sheriffs offfice and he D.A.but afre more concerned with popularity.Its time to empty the swamp. I agree that Raleigh has done by all my account, a good job as Sheriff and I support his relection. In a perfect world we might like to believe that some level of change is always for the better, but I have known Raleigh for some years and have found him to be approachable, respectful, and an all around very good person. While I personally have not agreed with some of the ways and manners this community has been run, I do support Raleigh Issac's reelection and contiuned chance to perform good work for the citizens of Suffolk.
I don't begrudge other's their own point of view, but we have a good Sheriff and he does warrent another term in my opinion.

Roger then you are not for open, transparent honest govt. Something many seem to remember that was your platform. This isnt about ones personality, its about character and the good old boy network at its best, not just at the civil level but the legal one.Statement being offered with utmost respect for Roger and his opinion. I dont disagree with the service of the sheriff but how he has abused his power or alleged abuse. Time to step up and comment nad address this issue.
I am unsure what if anything Raleigh did to help infulence the prosecution or not, of his son with his possible DUI matters. My recomendation for Raleigh has to do with my own contact over the years with the man, and he has to my knowledge, always lead with an open heart and a kind and respectful word. I must admit that I have not had much contact with the Sheriff's office, but they seem to be doing the job and other than some sideways swipes by some, Raleigh seems to be a gentleman, well organized, and honest. If you have facts that show otherwise, please let us all know.
I know how hard it can be to have those who do not want to sign their names to comments, calim all knowledge, but I have made my thoughts known in the OPEN and stand by them. I have always been for open and transparent government and have yet to figure out how my approval of Raleigh Issacs for Sheriff does not uphold that standing... Until such harsh claims of undue or improper actions by he or others are proven to be fact, I will continue my support for what I believe is a good man who is doing the job.
While I know it may grate some of my friends, I still endorse for relection our Sheriff, Raleigh Issacs. I do feel some things need to change in Suffolk, but I also feel Raleigh and his Deputies are doing a good job...

That is the point sir no one really does but where there is smoke there is fire. It isnt bout the ability of the department and the deputy's. I bid you well in your support of the sheriff.
If you want to find a blazing fire, why not look into how the Mayor and her husband make big dollars with her votes on council. Then there are her friends on council that also help her too.
Don't forget the first thing that Parr did when he got on council. Cash in on property he could not get rezoned untill he got to lobby his new freinds on council after the election.
The signs are going up, who are you going to vote for? I only wish there were a law that only let them put the signs up the week before the election, not 60 days prior.
The man challenging a four-term incumbent for sheriff said that he plans to expand the office's role in this 430-square -mile city by putting deputies on patrol if elected - and he wants to do it without adding positions. Jay Clason, a 57-year-old instructor for Maritime Civil Affairs Group, said some of the deputies who provide security at the courthouse should patrol the streets instead.
