OPEB.pdf (2708.4 KB)
Click on the above. Read as much as your heart can stand and you will see why taxes for everyone must rise and rise, and rise. OPEB is the description of unfunded benefits to government retirees that are paid from everyone's taxes, government employee or not.
Again, sorry; no Taxes are going down, none of them! The needs are even worse than known due to unfunded and under-funded promises that are now coming home to roost. OPEB is perhaps the least known issue that will drive huge demands for tax increases, on top of all those already being discussed...schools, roads, water & sewer, even real estate TAX will pale compared to this demand on local and state budgets just to make up for taxes not demanded from us when they should have been to meet promised benefits. You are not going to like what this internet site will show. Maybe you should just not read it. I tried and gave up.
This Internet Site was provided by Roger Leonard who is always trying to wake us up.

THIS OFFSETS OBAMA'S RHETORIC ABOUT HEALTH CARE
"Politicians can throw rhetoric around about 'bringing down the cost of health care' or they can even throw numbers around. But the numbers that politicians are throwing around don't match the numbers that the Congressional Budget Office finds when it analyzes the hard data. An old advertising slogan said, 'Progress is our most important product.' With politicians, confusion is their most important product. They confuse bringing down the price of medical care with bringing down the cost. ... Nothing is easier than for governments to impose price controls. They have been doing this, off an on, for thousands of years -- repeatedly resulting in (1) shortages, (2) quality deterioration and (3) black markets. Why would anyone want any of those things when it comes to medical care?" --Hoover Institution economist Thomas Sowell
THIS MIGHT CLARIFY
One of our readers had a few minutes of free time while downtown so got clarification on new City of Suffolk septic tank rules. Tanks must be pumped out every 5 years. Notification to septic tank owners (as indicated by permits on file) of new requirement began this year. Some good news however. Tanks only need to be pumped not pumped AND INSPECTED. And, if for example, you got your tank pumped this year and get a notice in the mail next year, you don't need to get it pumped again. Just send in a copy of the bill with the notice letter and they will restart the clock for you at year 4.

MAYBE I DON'T LIKE BEER
Yesterday President Obama in full damage control mode following his press conference remark calling the Cambridge Mass. Police as acting stupidly offered an olive branch to the Arresting Officer Crowley and Professor Gates to come to the White House and join him for a beer. What if the police officer doesn’t like beer and prefers wine instead. Maybe for personal or religious reasons he doesn’t drink alcohol. The same could be said about the professor. Why didn’t Obama offer a box of donuts to the police officer and a bucket fried chicken to the professor? It was yet another insulting arrogant remark and still there is no apology. If beer with Obama puts this issue to rest he should try it with Iran and North Korea.

OPEN AND TRANSPARENT ??
It really all depends upon what is IN the upcoming City Newsletter. Will it be just surface stuff, meaningless trifles, or meaty and meaningful? For years citizens have felt that some “news” didn’t even make it to the Council members and they were somewhat bewildered when it surfaced, sometimes during the meeting. Our email will happily accept every morsel of news. Is this another function for our spokesperson or will it require a new employee? They might consider this, our website, Inside Suffolk, has more readers, 38,000 as of this morning, than Suffolk households, surely we can work out some arrangement satisfactory to the city where all can get the news without having to sign up. But then how good has the city been to date with honest news? It was lack of news that prompted us to create Inside Suffolk. Are they trying to get rid of us? Hook up with http://www.suffolk.va.us/ then yellow box.

OOPS, IF TRUE HE CAN'T BE PRESIDENT
AP- WASHINGTON D.C. - In a move certain to fuel the debate over Obama’s qualifications for the presidency, the group Americans for Freedom of Information has Released copies of President Obama’s college transcripts from Occidental College. The transcript indicates that Obama, under the name Barry Soetoro, received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia as an undergraduate at the school. The transcript was released by Occidental College in compliance with a court order in a suit brought by the group in the Superior Court of California. The transcript shows that Obama (Soetoro) applied for financial aid and was awarded a fellowship for foreign students from the Fulbright Foundation Scholarship program. To qualify, for the scholarship, a student must claim foreign citizenship.

TWO SHARP BUSINESSMEN APPOINTED TO EDA
Congrats to appointers for convincing John D.Eure, Jr. and Mike Duman to take seats on our EDA. Both are real businessmen with long experience and they understand the growing pains that go with establishing and maintaining excellent public relations. Both are for sensible growth and government transparency. Their business reputations are excellent and both are well known by the citizens.

ANDY SAID "NAIL IN THE DOWNTOWN COFFIN"
I don’t think Andy Damiani was implying that Downtown Suffolk was already dead even though there are many reasons Andy could believe it is. He said it when he learned the Selena Cuffee Glenn, our petit City Manager suggested the Christmas Parade could be moved to North Suffolk. Again a high city official hints that Suffolk has a division line. But why not move it to Chuckatuck, or Eclipse, or Driver? North Suffolk can only mean north of Hwy 17; there being no official designation. So do the kids and fire trucks march up and down Harbor View, or around the big theatre parking lot? In the back of my mind a voice hints that the Mayor and our CM have a vision of a marble City Hall in NS. We all know who makes up the bulk of the parade audience downtown; it is a tradition that Main is the main location. And I’m not sure those folks in some areas of NS will sit still for horse apples on the pavement. Besides, in parts of NS they have their own traditional parades. And I just can’t imagine Curtiss Milteer in a convertible that far away from his borough.

WHAT DID YOU EXPECT
FINALLY...THE $50,000 QUESTION WAS ASKED!!!!!.....YESTERDAY ON THE "ABC..OBAMA SPECIAL ON HEALTH CARE"......OBAMA WAS ASKED, "MR. PRESIDENT WILL YOU AND YOUR FAMILY GIVE UP YOUR CURRENT HEALTH CARE PROGRAM AND JOIN THE NEW "UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE PROGRAM" THAT THE REST OF US WILL BE ON ????.....OBAMA IGNORED THE QUESTION AND DIDN'T ANSWER IT!!!.....A NUMBER OF SENATORS WERE ASKED THE SAME QUESTION AND THEIR RESPONSE WAS...WE WILL THINK ABOUT IT!!!!
ONE MAN'S VIEW
Obama has tried to play Lincoln, Reagan, JFK and FDR-- but in the end he can only play himself, a shallow, manipulative and egotistical amateur who is in over his head, and trying to drag the country down with him. Obama's White House is falling down and while the flashbulbs are still glittering and the parties are going on in D.C. and around the world, Obama and the Democratic Congress may be headed for a recession of their own.

NOW COMETH THE DEBATE
It will be 2014 before any of the expected new water will be sucked from Lake Western Branch. Millions will be spent to transfer and clean the H20 that will appear magically from the air as rain or pumped from aquifers. That rain must flow into that lake from somewhere or I will be living on a wide beach instead of highly assessed waterfront. The debate will be over who pays. Those who drink ground water instead of being hooked up to a city pipe will probably not expect not to be involved…aren’t they completely happy with their current supply and system? I am. But the city will charm us with how much that new water and city growth will lower our taxes via our assessments so everyone will have an added tax. It will not be a use tax, it will be socialism. So start building your case, the city that is elated and fond of growth is building theirs.

DON'T BLAME ME
Remember back a few years when the Pentagon created a deck of cards named for the bad guys in Iraq. Sadaam was the Ace of Spades. The idea was that as they were killed or captured that named card was removed from the deck and was no longer important in the scheme of things. Well now we have another deck of cards, this one beget by the nation’s highest-ranking officer, a Mr. Obama. Each card represents an appointed Czar who oversees a department of government and is responsible for its actions. There appears to be no ranking of Czars, just plenty of them, and they answer only to the very top card, Obama. We used to have a President of this country but the responsibilities, using Czars as pawns, are now spread so thin we don’t need one. Mr. Obama’s job is merely keeping track of the Czars, they are listed on his teleprompter, and deciding what each has done wrong so they can be fired. This creates the impression that he is the leader of this country.

JUST THOUGHT YOU'D LIKE TO KNOW
The ACLU has filed a suit to have all military cross-shaped headstones removed, and another suit to end prayer from the military completely. They're making great progress. The Navy Chaplains can no longer mention Jesus' name in prayer thanks to the wretched ACLU and our new administration. So I am told.

HALF THE YEAR IS SHOT
June 30, 2009 marked half way through a very uneventful year. The passing of Michael Jackson enlivened the papers and television but barely got my attention. At my age I’m more hip about health care and the value of our retirement securities. We did witness the problem solving of SPSA that was easily accomplished by moving their debts down the road. CenterPoint is a non-problem due to inactivity (no movement at the ports). I did wake up when Sarah Palin walked off the job but few of us know why. It is quite obvious that businesses downtown and most everywhere else are hurting. When the SNH fills its electronic edition with ads about belly flatness and credit scores it means lean times are here. And you must be wondering who will be the next publisher; Lindsey headed home to Tennessee. At the national level the liberals own the ballpark and that assures more debt for all of us. As bad as it is our assessments are holding fast and the city has taken over who gets the charity goodies, you know, our taxes. Obviously they’ve decided we the citizens can’t decide fairly how much of our money the Peanut Fest gets so another of those useless committees will figure it out.
Even here at Inside Suffolk we have been lulled to sleep so if you have something worth us writing about tell us right here. If it makes sense we will get back to work.

THIS JUST IN FOR A LAUGH
A man had purchased a big bag of Kirkland Nutra Nuggets dog chow for his German Shepard and the lady behind him in the checkout line asked if he had a dog. On an impulse he said, “No, I’ve decided to try that Purina Diet again. I probably shouldn’t because the last time I lost fifty pounds and ended up in intensive care with tubes coming out of every orifice of my body.” The lady then asked if the dog food had been poisoned. “No,” he said, “I stepped off the curb to sniff an Irish Setter and a car hit me.”
