CHESAPEAKE FORGES AHEAD

Chesapeake Square that should have been in Suffolk was handed $750,000  by the city to build a bank of theaters out shining Harborview 16. Closer to Suffolk, more movies and big move up in technology, such as enhanced sound systems, 100 percent digital projection and an XD Extreme Digital Cinema auditorium. The XD theater will be the largest in the facility and boast a wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor screen, plush seating and a custom sound system. It will show both 2D and 3D new releases. WOW, can you imagine such an item in Downtown Suffolk?  That would have been impressive in our mayor’s state of the city speech.

Why would the city of Chesapeake give Chesapeake Square $750,000 for anything much less a bank of theaters?

The mayor was overheard saying where is downtown Suffolk??? Another WTF moment.

This was the first of many example of how small minds of Suffolk, think small thoughts. The ability of our present leaders in charge to even imagine much more than a few PetsMarts in Suffolk, shows why taxes must be raised. The Mayor is perhaps the bet example ever of how Suffolk will alwyas be behind the the strategy game, because our wonderful economic development team, just does not know how to put a deal of substance together. This vial office seems only capable of reaching to the low-hanging fruit that is so easy to pick and will always fail to see the much more valuable stuff above their limited view. This will not change with mindless zombies like Mr Pair on City Council giving false praise for a job done poorly by this bunch. We need a vision of how to develop our city's potential and that is well beyond a few boutique stroes and venues. We need a re real deal and not just a few store expansions or more wharehouses.

Until we get real leaders demanding real economic development, we all can expect to see more demand to raise the real estate tax. To bad for us. Just another reason to try to get out of town and do it now.

The city of ches spends $1M-$2M buying the old theatre, then 750k on an incentive to an industry whose biggest competion is from a box outside 7-11, and your upset Suffolk can't put together those deals...REALLY???? You should be happy they are not.

Isn't there a Regal Theater nearby? Doesn't make sense why does Chesapeake Government subsidize a theater operation and cannibalize the customers from another. What happened to free competition in the marketplace like we have with the SCCA and their inhouse restaurant called Mistakeit.

Pock...Thats a lot of money to watch movies. I'm surprised you support city money being used.

I didn't support that idea, merely reporting. Do you always jump that quick?

Well we hear again from the ones downtown with an axe to grind with the truth. The fact is that Suffolk could have had the whole enchalda that is the Chesapeake Mall if they were not such smaller minds like WFU describes. With a mayor like we now have it will not be long before she can't sell any realestate except to her friend Mr. Parr. Why is it we have her for mayor again?

Pock...your report ended with a line that the Suff Mayor should have made this annoucementan after listing the dollars Ches is using. What should I conclude? I would not support Suff using tax dollars on the movies. Ches can have it.
